Beat the Heat: Managing Heat Stress in Oman’s Construction Sites

What is Heat Stress?

Heat stress occurs when the body cannot cool itself effectively. It can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and in severe cases, it can be fatal. Construction workers in marine, coastal, and earthworks projects are particularly vulnerable because they often work under direct sunlight with limited shade.

Common Symptoms to Watch For:

· Heavy sweating or sudden stop of sweating

· Dizziness, headache, or confusion

· Rapid heartbeat and breathing

· Muscle cramps

· Nausea or vomiting

· Extreme fatigue

Heat Stroke is a Medical Emergency — If someone shows signs of confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness, call for immediate medical help and start cooling the person.

Here are Some Heat Stress Prevention Measures

Implementation of a comprehensive Heat Stress Management Program tailored to Oman’s conditions:

1. Work Schedule Adjustments

· Shift heavy physical work to early morning or late afternoon whenever possible

· Implement mandatory rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas

· Reduce work intensity during peak heat hours (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM)

2. Hydration Strategy

· Provide unlimited cool drinking water and electrolyte solutions on all sites

· Encourage workers to drink regularly (every 15–20 minutes) even if not thirsty

· Monitor hydration levels

3. Acclimatization New workers and those returning from leave are gradually exposed to heat over 7–14 days with lighter duties and more frequent breaks.

4. Personal Protective Measures

· Light-colored, breathable uniforms

· Wide-brim hats and cooling neck towels

· High-quality sunblock and sunglasses

· Appropriate PPE that balances protection with heat management

5. Monitoring & Supervision

· Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) monitoring on sites

· Daily heat stress checklists by supervisors

· Buddy system — workers look after each other

6. Training & Awareness All employees should receive regular training on heat stress recognition and prevention. Toolbox talks during summer months should also focus on this topic.
